The Spiderman's Web

Swinging through life.

Love your neighbor as yourself

We've all heard these words from Christ before, but today I read a story that really sums those words up. It's the story about a college softball game and it's a little long, but definitely worth reading. When people ask how they can use their talents for God, I don't think He wants them to hit a double for them or shoot a birdie. I think He wants them to use them in the same way that Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace did. Check the story out here at espn.com.

Happy Birthday, Grandma!
Monday, April 28, 2008 | 0 Comments

It was actually a couple of weeks ago, but my only remaining grandparent had her 98th birthday this April. I just got this picture emailed from mom, so I'm sharing it with all of you. I've got plenty of Grandma Schafer in me, so if you want to blame someone for anything I ever say or do, she's the one the blame. She came to the United States when she was a little baby and has done everything from work in a factory during World War II to tend bar at the Old Heidelberg Inn in downtown Sebewaing, Michigan. Grandma was always good for a free bag of Made Rite Cheese Corn and a bottle of Squirt while I played pool and pong in her bar as a kid. Happy Birthday, Grandma!

15 Pizzas, 2 gallons of ice cream and lots of love
Sunday, April 27, 2008 | 0 Comments

On Wednesday, over 30 youth gathered in the youth room for our Spring Cleaning Extravaganza. I was really thrilled to see all of the work that got done. The arcade games were cleaned, closets organized, artwork done on all of the chalk squares, libraries organized, posters and 8 x 10's hung and the theaters seats are clean and beautiful. Thank you so much for everyone that helped out and documented this event with pictures. All it cost me was 15 pizzas and 4 gallons of ice cream. I'll have a photo gallery up on the messiahyouth.com site on Monday.

People's City Mission
Monday, April 21, 2008 | 0 Comments

I'm lining up another trip for the youth to serve at the People's City Mission Distribution Center and I just started thinking about what a great organization it is. They are always so gracious and thankful for the help that volunteers supply. They do the work that many of us are reluctant or afraid to do. They reach out with the gospel to those who are truly in need. Let's go for a big turnout on Wed. May 14th when the youth help sort clothing at the Distribution Center.

I am Iron Man
Saturday, April 19, 2008 | 0 Comments

I am so pumped up for the new Iron Man Movie. This spring could be a great start to the summer movie season, with Iron Man, the Hulk, Indiana Jones and Speed Racer all coming within two months. The one trailer I saw for Iron Man used the "Iron Man" song by Black Sabbath. If that song actually makes it in the movie, I'll give it two thumbs up just for that.

Wings Win an Overtime Thriller
Friday, April 18, 2008 | 0 Comments

With a quick overtime goal, the Wings win the decisive game 5 of this series. They really need to put these games away quicker, as they dominated the game, but allowed Nashville to sneak back into it with less than a minute remaining. I listened to the game over the Internet. Wish it was on real TV and not the lamest cable network ever, VS. Who gets that channel anyhow?

What They Play
Wednesday, April 16, 2008 | 0 Comments

While on the soccer bus yesterday, I grabbed the newsweek out of Bassett’s backpack and did a little reading. I ran into a link that I just had to follow up on.

what they play is a website devoted to helping people make educated decisions on the games they buy and play. After spending some time on their site, I was very impressed. They do a very thorough job of reviewing games and spend their energy on giving an objective look at them. They don’t judge, but just inform. It reminds me of how plugged IN ONline deals with movies, without the Christian approach.

If you enjoy gaming or know someone that does, point them toward www.whattheyplay.com

2 and 0
Sunday, April 13, 2008 | 1 Comments

The wings are 2 and 0 in their opening round playoff series against nashville. It was nice to head over to Matt’s house and check out the game on HD. My best red wings memory was when I taught at EAst and got some free tickets from a cop who had a son in my class. I parked just to the right of these stairs in a lot reserved for players. downtown detroit and he tells me to just leave the keys on the floor of the car and leave it unlocked in case he has to move it. It was surrounded by barbed wire fencing and guarded by about half a dozen other detroit cops, so i guess it was pretty safe. parked the car and 1 minute later i was in the stadium.
got to see gretzky play here when he was still with edmonton. Also got to take my dad to his only pro hockey game. saw quite a few octopi being flung onto the ice too. great memories of the joe. I can smell the little caesars pizza every time i see a picture of it.

Improv Everywhere
Wednesday, April 9, 2008 | 0 Comments

In this latest installment by the improv team, they go to a random little league baseball game and give the kids a major league experience. Check it out below and then head to their site for behind the scenes details.

This really is the best game ever. I played plenty of little league games when I was a kid, and I would have gone crazy to have this happen to me.
